Juliet

''I'll look to like, if looking liking move;
But no more deep will I endart mine eye
Than you consent gives strength to make it fly'' (I; III; 98-100)

This is what Juliet says when Lady Capulet, her mother, tries to convince her to marry Paris. This proves to us that at the beginning of the book, Juliet was really uncertain about marriage, in fact she would rather not marry. It also shows how she respects her mother. In this case she does not just tell her mother that she does not want to marry Paris, she says that she will think about it. But everything changes when she meets Romeo at the masquerade. Their meeting was anonymous, they did not know each other, but fell in love instantly. When she finds out that Romeo is a Montague, that is where her identity changes completely. Because the Montague and the Capulets are enemy families, she could never be with Romeo. So she decides to ''Deny thy father and refuse thy name'' (II; II; 34). Not only that, she also changes her mind about marriage. She is the one that actually proposes to him. They finally get married. After the marriage, a fight breaks out between Mercutio and Tybalt. Tybalt slay's Mercutio, and then Romeo kills Tybalt out of revenge. The Prince, instead of deciding to  put him on the death row, he decides to banish Romeo from Verona's walls. Rather then mourning her cousin Tybalt's death, she mourns her husband Romeo's banishment. This is an other way that proves that her love for Romeo is greater than her own name. An other way that proves that Juliet's love for Romeo is big, is shown by her preference of death instead of marrying Paris. She chooses to put her faith in Friar Laurence in faking her death by drinking the potion that he gave her.  When she awakens from her "unnatural sleep" (V; III; 152), Friar Laurence is there hurrying her out of the tomb for the watch is coming.  Beside her, she finds Romeo dead.  Instead of following the Friar out of the tomb, she makes the ultimate act of love; she stabs herself and dies for love.  This shows her devotion to love, rather than continuing her life and finding a new love, she chooses to follow her late husband to the grave.  Juliet takes makes a huge change throughout the story from being respectful towards her parents and being unsure about marriage, to marrying behind her parents' back and sacrificing for love.
